On Friday, June 25 a 51-year-old woman involved in a two-vehicle car crash at the intersection of Bradley Avenue and Walnut Street in Champaign was pronounced dead at Carle Hospital in Urbana. Unfortunately, her life could not be saved as the damages caused by the crash were too severe. The Champaign Police Department is currently investigating the two-vehicle collision, trying to uncover what led to the fatality.
Car crashes are more common than we may think – in the last five years, car crash fatalities have been over 36,000 people annually. Although this unfortunate car crash resulted in the loss of life, not all crashes that have damages do. On average, there will be 6 million car crashes a year with 3 million people being injured because of these crashes. Of that 3 million, 2 million will suffer irreversible injuries. Experiencing a car crash is much more likely to happen to us than we may believe. Statistics show that everyone is likely to experience three car crashes in their lifetime. Although these statistics may be frightening, having someone at your side during it all makes the insurance process and litigation process much easier.
Families who experience a fatality due to a car crash may be entitled to wrongful death claims, meaning they may receive damages for emotional distress, pain and suffering, or loss of companionship. During this hard time, it is important to act in a timely manner while hiring a lawyer in order to preserve the facts of the case, as well as any evidence collected during the time of the crash.
Regardless of the progress the Champaign Police Department makes in this case, it is important for any family who has lost someone in a car crash to hire an attorney to represent their needs and rights.
