Westville Police Chief David Booe stated that it was possible that a medical issue caused a driver to lose control of her vehicle before hitting bystanders at the Westville Labor Day parade, as reported by The News-Gazette. The vehicle has been impounded by the police for mechanical issues.
Booe reported that a total of nine people—some of whom are children—were injured in the incident. Seven people were rushed to the hospital by ambulances that were taking part in the parade itself. One person was injured severely enough to be transferred to Carle Hospital in Urbana. None of the injuries are life-threatening.
The incident occurred just two blocks ahead of the parade at the intersection of Illinois 1 and Main Street, according to Booe. Once ambulances from the procession were dispatched—and after Medix responded out of Danville—the parade eventually resumed for the thousands of spectators present for the event.
