On Thursday, April 24 a Newman man died after being struck by an Amtrack train.
The incident occurred in Savoy around 7 p.m. when farm chemical company employee, Brent E. Stewart, 42, drove a three-wheeled fertilizer applicator in front of a train. Emergency responders reported to the accident site near U.S. 45. Stewart was airlifted to Carle Foundation Hospital and pronounced dead at 8:42 p.m.
Traffic near the accident site was closed for about an hour while preliminary investigations and clean-up efforts took place. No one aboard the Amtrack train was seriously injured.
