The Thursday snow in Champaign caused major traffic pile-ups after multiple crashes occurred in the northbound and southbound lanes. That afternoon, a five-vehicle accident occurred in the northbound lanes, forcing all northbound lanes to be closed at 2pm. According to officials, three people sustained injuries in the accident while the other four involved individuals were unharmed.
Police reported that Jacklin Brookins, age 68, was driving a minivan on I-57 and was hit by a 31-year-old man driving a Ford truck when she was slowing to make a U-turn in the median. The three other vehicles involved, driven by a 41-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man, and a 21-year-old woman, couldn’t avoid the collision in time and collided with the minivan and truck.
20 minutes later, an accident occurred in the southbound lanes of I-57. While both drivers avoided harm, the southbound lanes became very congested.
