At this time, the Listeria outbreak from cantaloupe has killed up to 16 people and sickened 72, but health officials think that this number will increase within the next few weeks.
The illnesses have been reported in 18 different states and the FDA and CDC are urging anyone who has cantaloupe that was produced from Jensen Farms in Colorado to throw them out.
The government has not released a list of all the retailers that sold the defective product, but if it is unknown where the fruit is from, it should not be eaten. A FDA Commissioner has stated that even more illnesses may be reported within the next few weeks because the incubation period of the bacteria can be up to four weeks. The cantaloupes were last shipped on Sept. 10.
