With less than a month left in the spring session, speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives and Chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois Michael Madigan presided over the entire House to tackle issues regarding the state’s workers’ compensation system, the Chicago Tribune reported on May 5.
Republican Governor Rauner believes that the high costs of workers’ comp in Illinois serves as an impediment to business.
Madigan and fellow Democrats heard the business community’s side, which said that the cost savings promised in 2011 have failed to materialize, although most of the hearing focused on how workers’ and their families have been affected by the workers’ compensation system in Illinois.
One solution that may benefit both sides of this issue, presented by the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association CEO Greg Baise, is utilizing lower costing medical care for workers’ comp treatment. As it stands, the state pays far more for regular medical procedures under workers’ compensation than those treated through private or government healthcare.
