The State of Ilinois recently fined a nursing home in Urbana, Illinois nearly $32,000 for four individual offenses combined. The Urbana nursing home, named University Rehabilitation Center of C-U, was fined $25,000 for a type A violation. This violation, being the second most serious violation, came about from a dementia patient who fell and died days later due to injuries suffered during the fall. Although the fall took place in 2020, the investigation has been led throughout the year 2021. The investigation showed that University Rehabilitation Center of C-U failed to implement dementia trained staff into their program, as well as failing to implement a plan for dementia patients and failing to provide a safe environment for one of their patients.
The University Rehabilitation Center of C-U has also been fined $2,200 for three separate offenses, one being failure to treat stage 3 pressure ulcers in a timely manner. This nursing home has constantly been fined for failure to treat their residents with the care and respect they are deserving of. This type of behavior in nursing homes or assisted living facilities is not uncommon – many other facilities in the Champaign – Urbana area have faced fines for similar occurrences. The Champaign – Urbana Nursing and Rehab facility was recently fined for two type A violations, one for failure to ensure a resident’s safety during transportation, allowing the resident to slip out of their wheelchair and suffer from extreme pain and fractures, and another for failure to do a proper follow up after three of four resident falls.
This is not the type of care that we expect from our assisted living facilities. As family members of an elderly person, making the tough decision to admit our loved one to a nursing home can be very stressful. We expect the nursing home to be able to give better care to our loved one and be able to assist them with the medical needs that we are unable to because of our lack of medical knowledge or busy schedule. Making the decision to admit your loved one to a nursing home should give you some peace of mind in knowing that they should receive better care than you can provide them. However, this is sometimes not the case. Many nursing homes are understaffed, underpaid, and overall have a lack of care for their residents. It is not uncommon for a nursing home to be understaffed, as not many people are willing to work the long and strenuous hours their shifts require. Being understaffed leads to many residents not receiving the proper care they require and can even result in certain injuries, possibly even death. When admitting your loved one to a nursing home, you should not have to worry if you are paying for your loved one to endure lack of care, lack of empathy, injury or worse.
