Three vehicles were involved in a fatal collision in the evening on Wednesday, August 5th near milepost 150 on Interstate 72. The crash, which happened in Macon County, occurred when a service truck was working on a broken down semi-truck on the side of the road. Another semi rear-ended the broken down semi and proceeded to collide with the service truck.
Unfortunately, the service truck operator did not survive after being airlifted to the hospital. The other two drivers suffered severe injuries and were transported to the hospital. The driver of the semi-truck that struck the two other vehicles has been preliminarily charged with a Scott’s Law violation for failing to yield to a stationary vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. The roadway was closed for about nine hours while emergency responders handled the incident, but reopened to traffic early the following morning.
While not all accidents can be prevented, many can be when drivers adhere to traffic laws and practice safe driving. Scott’s Law, also known as the “Move Over” law, sets out guidelines drivers must follow when approaching a stationary vehicle: slow down, drive with caution, and move over to another lane when safe. This law applies to all vehicles displaying flashing warning lights.
