Following an Illinois Department of Public Health report from this past August 2019, a Champaign nursing home has been fined $25,000 for a violation. The nursing home, Champaign Rehab Center located at 1915 S. Mattis Ave, failed to properly treat a patient with Type 2 diabetes and peripheral vascular disease.
Nursing home staff members neglected to assess the condition of the residents’ feet and obtain treatment for them. This resulted in the resident being admitted to the hospital with gangrene and requiring an above-the-knee amputation of their right leg. The nursing home was charged with a Type A violation, which is the second most serious category, meaning that death or serious physical and mental harm was probable.
Unfortunately, that is not the only nursing home to recently be fined as a result of violations in the area. Country Health in Gifford was fined $2,200 following a Type B violation. In September 2019, a nursing home resident with dementia and Parkinson’s disease fell and suffered a cut on the forehead that required stitches. The nursing home was fined for failing to assess the resident’s fall and accident risk, as well as for not providing supervision and help with the resident’s transfer.
The Accolade Healthcare of Paxton on Pells was charged with a Type B violation, resulting in a $2,200 fine. The July 2019 IDPH report showed that an employee failed to properly wash their hands before tending to a resident’s pressure ulcer dressing change and failed to prevent cross-contamination. In addition, the nursing home staff did not alert visitors and staff of infection control precautions for the one resident. Furthermore, the facility failed to clean and disinfect 10 of the residents’ blood glucose monitoring devices. The facility also received violations for failing to complete an accident form and investigate an accident.
