May 19th-25th is National Safe Boating Week, a public safety initiative that is promoted by the National Safe Boating Council. The purpose of the initiative is to remind people to be safe on the water and make sure to always wear a life jacket. Every year, life jackets save lives and everyone on board should make sure to wear their life jacket at all times. Of course, while it is not always mandatory for adults to always have a life jacket on while boating, it is often mandatory for minors to wear one.
In Illinois, the law requires minors under the age of 13 to wear a life jacket while aboard any watercraft that is under 26 feet in length while the boat is moving. The only exceptions to this rule are if they are inside a cabin or if the boat is operating on private property.
The team at Spiros Law, P.C. encourages everyone to stay safe on the water during this long holiday weekend, and be sure to wear your life-jacket!
