The United States Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has declared that a 21-year-old temporary worker’s fingers might not have been amputated had South Elgin, Illinois-based metal manufacturer Custom Aluminum Products installed proper safety guards to keep workers’ hands out of the metal press’ danger zone.
OSHA inspectors investigated an accident after it occurred on Nov. 4, 2015. A temporary employee, who had only worked at the company for four weeks, lost his ring, middle, and index fingers, and part of his right pinky finger when his hands got caught in the aluminum press as he was feeding materials into it. After their investigation, OSHA cited Custom Aluminum Products with one willful and one serious safety violation and proposed to fine them $70,000 in penalties.
