Ten lawmakers on key Senate and House of Representatives committees and members of the Democratic Party, including presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, have asked the United States Department of Labor to address a “pattern of detrimental changes in state workers’ compensation laws” that have increasingly limited protections and benefits for injured workers over the past ten years.
In a letter to Labor Secretary Thomas Perez, they noted that in the investigation conducted by NPR and New York City-based ProPublica, 33 states have reduced workers’ compensation benefits and made it harder for injured workers to qualify for benefits.
In the letter, lawmaker wrote that “State workers’ compensation laws are no longer providing adequate levels of support and compensation for workers injured on the job. The race to the bottom now appears to be nearly bottomless.”
