The Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has presented proposed rules to better workplace safety and health through a more transparent tracking of workplace injuries and illnesses. The public sector is given until Feb. 6, 2014 (90 days) to comment and make suggestions regarding the proposed rule, of which details will be announced in a meeting to be conducted by OSHA officials on Jan. 9, 2014 in Washington, D.C.
OSHA has proposed to amend the current way of storing data on employee injury and illness information by adding a format that would make it possible for electronic submission of data, with the goal of making records accessible to the public and easy to locate.
Records that are up-to-date and industry-specific will make it easier for OSHA to assist workers and enforce measures that would cater to the needs of at-risk workers, while at the same time making it possible for employers to compare injury rates with their industry competitors.
