Wednesday afternoon, a Good Samaritan was killed while attempting to help a man that was fatally struck in a pedestrian accident on Interstate 57.
According to officials with Illinois State Police, a 58-year-old Tennessee man was traveling northbound on I-57 near mile marker 277 when the tire came off of his car.
The man then got out and tried to retrieve the tire after it came to a stop near the median, but he was struck by a car while doing so. An 80-year-old man then stopped his car in order to get out and help the Tennessee man’s female passenger pull him from the roadway.
He ran across the road in order to call for more help and this is when he was also struck by a car. The man who was struck by the first car was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency crews and the Good Samaritan was transported to the Carle Urbana Hospital in order to be treated for injuries sustained. After arriving at the hospital, he was also pronounced dead.
No charges have been filed at this time pending the investigation into the accident. Northbound lanes of I-57 were shutdown for over two hours after the collision.
