4 students injured in school bus accident

This past Friday, a school bus stopped at a four-way stop on U.S. 136 and Illinois 47 was struck near the back wheel on the driver’s side by a passenger vehicle. Four students sitting at the back of the bus sustained minor injuries, including bruising and neck pain. All four were taken to an Urbana hospital for observation, and one student was required to stay overnight for additional observation. The bus driver was also taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

The bus, driven by a 62-year-old veteran driver, was heading east when a 2004 Hyundai car slid through the intersection and hit the bus. The driver of the car, 56-year-old David Curry, was not injured in the accident. He did however, receive a ticket for failing to reduce his speed to avoid the crash.

Superintendent Barb Thompson credited the bus driver and emergency response teams for keeping the rest of the children calm. Those who were not injured were taken to school on a back-up bus.
